Eye Specialist Dr. Amit Solanki has strictly advised people to avoid the habit of frequently rubbing their eyes, terming it extremely harmful for eye health. Speaking to children and adult, Dr. Solanki said that this habit not only increases the risk of eye infection but can also damage the cornea in the long run, which can lead to weakened vision.
He was addressing Urjasvini Special School students in Indore at Shanti Eye Tech Auditorium during kids visit for eye camp.
Bacteria and viruses enter the eye directly
Dr. Solanki explained that people often rub their eyes due to fatigue, itching, or dryness. Doing so allows bacteria and viruses to enter the eye directly through dirty hands, leading to problems like conjunctivitis (pink eye). Frequent rubbing can thin the cornea, a condition called Keratoconus, which can cause serious vision loss and requires complex treatment.
Wash your eyes with clean, cool water
Dr. Solanki advised that whenever you feel itching or discomfort in the eye, instead of rubbing, wash your eyes with clean, cool water or use lubricating eye drops as advised by a doctor.
Dr. Solanki reminded everyone that healthy eyes are the foundation of a healthy life. Taking care of your eyes is more important than taking care of any gadget or clothing; just think of those who do not have eyes.
Important Tips
Clean Hands: Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before touching your eyes. This significantly reduces the risk of infection.
Adequate Break (20-20-20 Rule): While working on a screen, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes. This reduces eye strain, lessening the urge to rub.
Lubricating Drops: If you feel dryness or itching in the eyes, use eye drops (artificial tears) suggested by a doctor; do not rub.
Allergy Control: If itching is due to an allergy, consult a doctor and take anti-allergic medication regularly to prevent itching.
Sufficient Sleep: Get 7-8 hours of deep sleep daily. Tired eyes often prompt itching and rubbing.
