Bhopal: The resounding beats of drums, colourful masks, spectacular acrobatics and remarkable balance thrilled the students, while every display of the artists’ extraordinary coordination was met with enthusiastic applause. The occasion was a vibrant presentation of Purulia Chhau, the world-renowned folk dance tradition of West Bengal, organised at Eklavya Model Residential School under the aegis of SPIC MACAY Bhopal Chapter.
Renowned Chhau artist Tarapada Rajak and his troupe captivated the audience with their energy, skill and breathtaking acrobatics.
The highlight of the programme was ‘Mahishasura Mardini’, an evocative portrayal of the battle between Goddess Durga and Mahishasura. The colourful masks, powerful body movements, traditional musical instruments and vigorous, heroic dance sequences introduced the students to India’s rich mythological and folk traditions while keeping them thoroughly engaged.
The artists’ high jumps, physical balance and movements inspired by martial arts were a major attraction. The remarkable coordination and balance displayed by pairs of artists portraying a lion and a buffalo left everyone amazed. The auditorium echoed with applause throughout the performance.
Following the presentation, Tarapada Rajak introduced the students to the striking masks and traditional musical instruments used in Chhau. The children eagerly tried on the masks themselves and enjoyed experiencing this unique folk tradition up close, while also interacting with the artists.
School Principal Amrit Jharia appreciated the artists and observed that such a performance is the result of years of rigorous practice, relentless riyaaz, tremendous energy and exceptional teamwork. He encouraged the students to imbibe these qualities of discipline, dedication and coordination in their own lives.
For the students, the programme was much more than a cultural performance—it was an inspiring opportunity to experience India’s rich folk heritage and understand the value of creativity, discipline and the power of collective effort.
