Recently released Hindi mystery thriller Saali Mohabbat is now streaming on ZEE5 and offers viewers a refreshing take on the genre.
Rather than being a typical whodunit, the film unfolds as a gripping “howdunit,” exploring themes of love, betrayal and hidden truths. Led by Radhika Apte, who delivers a deeply nuanced performance as a quiet, introverted housewife, the film stands out for its calm yet intense storytelling.
Directed with sensitivity, Saali Mohabbat draws audiences into its layered characters and relationships, raising a powerful question—do we truly know those closest to us?
The film’s biggest strength lies in its calm, intense treatment, which makes every scene memorable. Radhika Apte plays the lead role, bringing emotional depth and inner strength to her character. Here are some highlights from her conversation:
Drawn Towards a Compelling Character
Saali Mohabbat is not a conventional crime thriller filled with fast-paced action and chase sequences. Revolving around love, deception, betrayal, and murder, the film unfolds slowly. Its atmosphere is quiet and still, yet it pulls you in deeply. The story places a powerful question before the audience—do we really know the people we consider our own? I found this idea extremely intriguing, and that’s what makes this thriller completely different from others for me.
I play the role of Smita, a simple housewife. I feel there is depth and seriousness in her character, but also a certain lightness. She finds happiness in small things and doesn’t need much to feel content. There is an innocence within her, and perhaps that is what connects me to her the most.
When an Actor Becomes a Director, It’s a Big Advantage
Radhika shares that when an actor turns director, it is a big advantage. They already understand the challenges of acting, so you don’t have to explain everything. The communication happens on a different level. However, it’s not always easy for the director either, because after years of acting, they already have a strong image of the character in their mind. Stepping away from that and giving someone else freedom can be difficult. In this case, Tisca was very generous as a director. She clearly communicated what she wanted and then gave me complete freedom to perform the character my way. This balance worked beautifully and resulted in exactly what she envisioned.
A Wonderful Bond on Set
Radhika revealed that the atmosphere on set was always very fun. The bonding among everyone was exceptional. Divyenndu and I shared great camaraderie. He is truly a brilliant actor—very detail-oriented and extremely creative. Watching him work is a joy in itself. Many times, we would end up laughing just by watching each other’s scenes. Overall, the environment on set was very positive and light-hearted.
The Most Different Role of Her Career
Talking about the role, Radhika said, “This character is completely different from anything I’ve done so far. She is very quiet and deeply introverted. I have never played such a silent, inward-looking character before. There is a stillness within her—she can sit in one place, like a garden, for hours without speaking, simply doing her own thing. She doesn’t need much from the outside world. Honestly, I’ve never portrayed a character like this before.”
A Wonderful Experience Working with Manish Malhotra
Radhika shared that Manish is a wonderful human being. He took great care of everyone on set. People like him—so fair and genuine—are rare in the industry, and she truly values that. There was an ongoing joke on set because the costumes in the film were extremely simple. Manish would laugh and say, “How much should I wash these so they look even more worn?” Yet, even in their simplicity, everything was perfectly on point. The film’s beauty and atmosphere reflect Manish’s vision and belief. Growing up watching films like Rangeela, where his designs brought so much joy, and now working with him feels like a dream come true.
What Is Radhika Doing These Days Apart from Acting?
“At the moment, my entire life revolves around my child—childcare, childcare, and only childcare. It’s exhausting, but equally fulfilling. I don’t feel like I’m missing out on anything, because children grow up so fast and I don’t want to lose these moments. I’m very happy.”
