An interactive session was recently conducted at Shri Ayyappa Public School for school teachers on the topic “Identifying Behavioural Issues in Children and Addressing Them in School Capacity.”
The session was led by Dr. Vini Jhariya, Clinical and Child Psychologist, who emphasized that behaviour is often a form of communication, and early support in schools can prevent bigger difficulties later. School Principal Sunanda Yadav was present throught this training program.
Dr. Jhariya highlighted that studies in India show 6–12% of school-going children experience behavioural or emotional difficulties, such as attention problems, anxiety, aggression, or conduct concerns (National Mental Health Survey; Indian Journal of Psychiatry, 2022). Research also indicates that classroom-based strategies can significantly reduce disruptive behaviours and improve learning outcomes.
During the workshop, teachers raised common challenges and were guided with practical solutions.
Frequent interruptions or blurting out answers: Structured turn-taking activities, positive reinforcement, and clear class rules help children build patience and self-control.
Aggression towards peers or damaging property: Instead of punishment, teachers were advised to identify triggers, provide a calm corner, and collaborate with parents. Studies show proactive plans reduce aggression and improve peer relationships.
Inattentiveness or daydreaming: Teachers can seat such children closer, give shorter instructions, and include movement breaks. Evidence shows active teaching improves attention by up to 25%.
Emotional outbursts or frequent crying: Empathetic responses, teaching calming techniques like deep breathing, and maintaining parent communication were recommended. Emotional coaching in schools is proven to enhance resilience.
The session concluded with the message that while schools cannot replace therapy, they are the first line of support. Equipping teachers with simple, evidence-based tools ensures that children feel understood and guided, laying the foundation for healthier growth.
