Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav stated that in our culture, serving living beings is considered the highest form of duty (dharma). In the truest sense, altruism—or serving others—is the essence of serving humanity. For five decades, the Sankara Eye Foundation has realized the vision of “serving humanity is serving the Divine” (Nar Seva hi Narayan Seva) by providing eye care to those in need with unwavering commitment and dedication. Restoring a person’s eyesight brings joy not only to their own life but to their entire family.
CM Mohan Yadav was addressing the golden jubilee celebration of the Sankara Eye Foundation—held in Indore—via video conferencing from Samatva Bhavan at the CMr’s residence on Wednesday. On behalf of the Government of Madhya Pradesh, he extended his congratulations and best wishes to the Foundation’s founder and managing trustee, Padma Shri Dr. R.V. Ramani, co-founder Dr. Radha Ramani, and all the dedicated doctors and diligent staff members for successfully completing 50 years of service.
A Humble Beginning, A Broad Reach of Service: Chief Minister Dr. Yadav mentioned that in May 1977, drawing inspiration from the Shankaracharyas of Kanchi, Dr. R.V. Ramani and Dr. Radha Ramani established a primary health center in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, with the objective of serving those in need.
Today, this initiative has expanded to ten states across the country. The foundation’s 14 super-specialty eye hospitals provide treatment to more than a thousand patients every day. It was noted that approximately 80 percent of the patients at the foundation receive eye treatment free of charge, while the remaining 20 percent pay for their care. This unique arrangement ensures that a lack of financial resources never becomes a barrier to treatment for anyone in need.
Raising Awareness About Eye Donation: CM emphasized the need to dispel misconceptions prevalent in society regarding eye donation. He stated that the message of this noble cause must be disseminated to the public through awareness campaigns. Schools, colleges, youth organizations, and social institutions should play an active role in this effort. He added that the golden jubilee celebration serves as an opportune moment for the institution to set new goals for the future.
The Chief Minister expressed his hope that the Sankara Eye Foundation would continue its dedicated service, extending quality eye care to an ever-greater number of people in need.
Earlier, Deputy Chief Minister (Public Health and Medical Education) Rajendra Shukla also addressed the golden jubilee celebration of the Sankara Eye Foundation via a virtual connection. The event was attended by public representatives from Indore, local citizens, and the doctors and staff of the eye center.
