It is often said that feeding the hungry is the greatest act of service; however, when this food not only fills the stomach but also uplifts an individual’s self-respect, it becomes a true embodiment of ‘public welfare.’
The Madhya Pradesh government’s ‘Mukhya Mantri Deendayal Rasoi Yojana’ (Deendayal Kitchen Scheme) has been fulfilling this very pledge in Gwalior for the past nine years.
By providing a nutritious meal—comprising lentils (dal), rice, vegetables, and five rotis—for a mere 5 rupees, the state government is playing the role of ‘Annapurna’ (the Goddess of Food) for economically vulnerable individuals and laborers in need.
Beneficiaries dining at the Deendayal Rasoi describe the meal served here as, in the truest sense, a “Thali of Dignity“—one where, alongside the food itself, they are also served a generous portion of self-respect.
To date, the “Deendayal Rasoi” in Gwalior has provided meals to over 59 lakh needy individuals. The first Deendayal Rasoi in Gwalior was inaugurated by the state government on April 7, 2017, at the main bus stand.
Currently, there are a total of eight “Deendayal Rasois” operating in Gwalior. Four of these are permanent kitchens, situated at the Main Bus Stand, Rajpayaga Road, the Jhansi Road Bus Stand, and Intuc Maidan.
The four mobile Deendayal Rasois arrive early in the morning at various intersections where laborers gather in search of work. This initiative is not merely a government scheme; it serves as a vital pillar of support for thousands of such laborers, students from impoverished families, and the attendants of patients who travel to Gwalior from other cities.
A Blend of Technology and Hygiene
To ensure the consistent quality of this service, the kitchens utilize modern machinery. The ‘food service’ operations commence daily as early as 5 AM.
Using these modern machines, an average of 15,000 rotis are prepared every day. The efficiency of the management is such that the quantities of rotis and rice are precisely calculated according to the daily menu, ensuring that not even a morsel of food goes to waste.
Govt and Society Join Hands to Feed the Needy
The greatest success of the Deendayal Rasoi lies in its credibility. As of today, the demand is such that there is a seven-day waiting list for donors wishing to contribute. With the support of social organizations, free meals are being provided to the relatives of patients at various hospitals—such as Jayarogya Hospital, the Trauma Center, and the Cancer Hospital.
Public-spirited citizens of the city sponsor meals here to mark their birthdays, wedding anniversaries, or in memory of their loved ones. During festivals and special occasions, the demand surges to such an extent that the management is compelled to handle bookings several days in advance.
This visionary scheme by the Government of Madhya Pradesh has instilled confidence in the most marginalized sections of society, assuring them that the state government stands firmly by their side. Available for a mere 5 rupees, this dignified meal—or ‘Thali’—has become a symbol of service and good governance in Gwalior.
