No Detention Policy: The central government has announced the discontinuation of the ‘No Detention Policy’ for students in classes 5 and 8. However, the Tamil Nadu government has declined to abolish this policy. Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi has said that the central government’s decision will not be enforced in the state’s schools as this would be detrimental for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
The Tamil Nadu government said that it will continue its special education model in the state and the ‘No Detention Policy’ will continue. Thus students of class-5 and 8 in Tamil Nadu will not be failed and promoted in the next class.
The minister said that the state government is preparing its own education policy. Students will be promoted to the next class and they would not be failed. The decision of the Center will be applicable only to central schools. The old systems will be followed in government and private schools of Tamil Nadu.
Education Minister Poyyamozhi said that students, teachers and parents of state schools need not worry about Centre’s decision. He said, “We will ensure that the existing system continues. This new policy will not be implemented in Tamil Nadu. No one needs to worry. The state government will ensure that every student gets a chance to complete education. Especially the rural and weaker section students will be taken care of.”
The Central government recently abolished the ‘No Detention Policy’. Now students of class 5 and 8 can be detained if they fail in the examination. The government believes that this step is necessary to improve the level of education. The central government has implemented this policy with after consulting education experts.
This is not the first time that Tamil Nadu has opposed any education policy of the Center. Earlier, when the Center introduced NEET, even then the Tamil Nadu government had opposed it. Tamil Nadu CM Stalin has been demanding several times to abolish NEET and start admission in professional and technical courses. He has demanded the restoration of the old system.
