Haryana Election 2024 Results: The initial lead by the Congress party in Haryana has shifted as recent updates suggest that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is now on track to secure a third consecutive term in the state. The BJP currently leads in 48 out of the 90 Assembly constituencies, while the Congress is ahead in 35.
Despite the BJP’s current lead, earlier exit polls painted a different picture. An aggregate of seven exit polls had predicted that the Congress would win 55 seats, comfortably surpassing the halfway mark of 45 seats needed for a majority. The BJP, according to these projections, was expected to secure only 26 seats.
Before the counting of votes began, there was an air of excitement outside the Congress headquarters in New Delhi. Party supporters celebrated with traditional music and dancing, anticipating a significant victory based on early exit poll forecasts.
On the other hand, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini expressed confidence that the BJP would secure another term. “We have accomplished significant development over the past decade. The framework established by former Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar will continue to benefit Haryana for years to come,” said Saini, who took over as Chief Minister from Khattar in March.
As the BJP’s lead solidified, Congress supporters began to moderate their celebrations. However, they remained cautiously hopeful about their party’s prospects, knowing that the final results had yet to be declared. With both parties locked in a competitive race, the atmosphere among the Congress supporters is still one of cautious optimism.
The BJP’s performance in Haryana is of particular significance, given the party’s reduced success in recent national elections. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP won all 10 of Haryana’s parliamentary seats, but in the latest general elections, they managed to secure only five. The upcoming Assembly elections in Haryana and Jammu & Kashmir are seen as critical tests for the party as it seeks to reassert its dominance after failing to achieve a majority in the general elections for the first time in a decade.
For the Congress party, the stakes are equally high. After facing significant losses in the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the party has been looking for signs of resurgence. This year’s general election results, where the Congress gained 99 seats and benefited from the INDIA alliance, have been viewed as a positive indicator. Party leaders have emphasized that the outcomes in both Haryana and Jammu & Kashmir will serve as crucial tests of the Congress’s comeback strategy and its ability to challenge the BJP’s dominance.
As the final results draw nearer, both parties are anxiously awaiting the outcome, knowing that the implications of these elections extend far beyond Haryana. For the BJP, it is a chance to consolidate power once again, while for the Congress, it is an opportunity to prove that their revival is well underway.
