Mumbai: The central government is considering formulating a special policy to promote the cultivation and spread of broccoli, which has become a superfood.
Dr. Mehraj A.S., Deputy Commissioner (Natural Farming and Climate Change) of the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, stated during the ‘Broccoli Consumption Conference-2026’ that the government will provide all possible assistance for its cultivation, storage, and processing. He said that this is the first conference of its kind in the vegetable sector, which will prove extremely important from the point of view of health benefits and value addition.
Dr. Mehraj emphasized that farmers need better market access and not just training in cultivation techniques. He proposed that a ‘Center of Excellence’ could be established in the field of broccoli, for which cooperation from the Japanese government could be sought. In addition, emphasis was also placed on improving existing cold storage facilities for the safe storage of broccoli and encouraging its organic cultivation in the future, for which the government will ensure financial and technical assistance.
On this occasion, former Indian cricketer Krishnamachari Srikkanth also shared his experiences and explained how broccoli has become an essential part of his daily diet. He underlined the importance of a natural diet for a healthy and happy life.
Javier Bernabéu, the pioneer of the broccoli revolution in Spain, and Professor Dr. Shalini Arya also participated in the conference and discussed the global scenario and health benefits of this vegetable.
