Accused Sanjay Rai has been found guilty in the rape and murder of a female trainee doctor at RG Kar Hospital. The court will pronounce the sentence in this case on Monday.
This incident, which took place in August last year, gave rise to a public outrage across West Bengal.
On August 9, 2024, the body of a 31-year-old female trainee doctor was found in the conference room of the hospital. Investigation revealed that the doctor was first raped and then murdered.
After this incident, protests started in Kolkata and health services in the state were stalled for more than two months.
On Saturday, Kolkata’s Sealdah Court has given its verdict in this case. While pronouncing the verdict, the court’s special judge Anirban Das said that the evidence presented by the CBI against the accused proves his crime of sexual abuse and rape. He has been found guilty under sections 64 and 103 (1) of the Indian Penal Code.
In this case, the CBI has not been able to file a chargesheet against the medical college principal Sandip Ghosh and the local Tala police station in-charge Abhijit Mandal on the charge of ‘destroying evidence’, due to which they have got bail.
The court said that the sentence in this case will be pronounced on Monday, during which the accused Sanjay Rai will have to be present in the court.
But the deceased doctor’s parents have expressed dissatisfaction with the CBI investigation and have filed a petition in the Supreme Court and the Calcutta High Court which are monitoring the case.
In this petition, they have appealed that the special court of Sealdah should be stopped from pronouncing the sentence in this case and the entire case should be investigated afresh once again.
