At least 53 people have died and 38 injured as a strong 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck Shigatse city of Tibet on Tuesday (7 January 2025). It is feared that this earthquake in Shigatse city may cause considerable damage there. Strong tremors were also felt in North India including Nepal’s capital Kathmandu.
Tremors were also felt in Delhi, Bihar, Bengal, The tremors were particularly felt in Bihar where people were seen outside their houses and apartments. There have been no reports of any damage to property because of the earthquake in India.
Tremors were also felt in Nepal’s capital Kathmandu some 400 km away, where residents ran from their houses.
“We felt a very strong earthquake. So far we have not received any report of injuries or physical loss,” said Anoj Raj Ghimire, chief district officer of Solukhumbu district in Nepal, at the foot of Mount Everest, the world’s highest mountain.
“We have mobilised police and other security forces as well as locals to collect information about the damage,” he added.
The quake also rocked Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan, and Bihar which borders Nepal. So far, no reports of any damage or loss to property have been received, officials in India said.
According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter of the earthquake is in Tibet, China, where an earthquake of 7.1 magnitude has occurred. Earlier, USGS had reported the epicenter of the earthquake as Lobuche area of Nepal, but then it changed it.
USGS has also recorded four earthquakes of more than 4.8 magnitude in the Khumbu region of Nepal. Whereas according to China’s official channel CCTV, an earthquake of 6.9 magnitude hit Shigatse city of Tibet at 6.35 am on Tuesday morning as per Indian time.
The impact of the temblor was felt across the Shigatse region of Tibet, home to 8 lakh people. The region is administered by Shigatse city, the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama, one of the most important figures in Tibetan Buddhism.
