Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav has announced the construction of a state-of-the-art Medicity and Medical College in Ujjain.
This ambitious project, initiated with a traditional Bhoomi-Pujan ceremony, aims to position Ujjain as a global player in the healthcare sector. The initiative, set for completion before the Simhastha festival in 2028, is part of a broader strategy to boost medical infrastructure and healthcare accessibility in the region.
Dr. Yadav revealed that the Medicity will encompass advanced medical facilities, a Medical Device Park, and six high-rise buildings designed for efficient space usage. The complex will include residential quarters for doctors, paramedics, and other essential staff, creating a self-contained healthcare hub. The campus will span 14.97 acres and cost approximately ₹592.3 crore.
The infrastructure plan includes:
Teaching Hospital: A 9-storey hospital with a basement, providing 550 patient beds.
Medical College Building: An 8-storey educational facility equipped for comprehensive medical education and research.
Hostels and Facilities: Separate hostels for nursing students and interns (14-storey for nurses and girls, 11-storey for boys), a library, gymnasium, parking areas, and a foot-over bridge for easy access.
Sustainable Technology: The complex will integrate energy-efficient systems, fire safety mechanisms, rainwater harvesting, solar energy, and sewerage treatment.
Expansion of Medical Education in Madhya Pradesh
Since 2003-04, Madhya Pradesh has expanded its medical college count from 5 to 30, with 17 government and 13 private institutions. This infrastructure growth is further supported by 12 additional medical colleges currently under development. Dr. Yadav highlighted the state’s commitment to integrating medical education into high-capacity hospitals, ensuring both educational advancement and accessible healthcare.
The new Medicity and Medical College in Ujjain will offer medical education to 150 students, providing them with a robust learning environment in close proximity to a teaching hospital. With these additions, the state’s capacity for medical education will significantly increase, doubling the number of medical students from 5,000 to an anticipated 10,000 in the coming years.
Additional Developments in Ujjain’s Healthcare Sector
Beyond the Medicity, Ujjain’s healthcare infrastructure is set for further enhancements:
Ayurvedic Dhanvantari Mahavidyalaya: This institution is being developed to function as a fully equipped Ayurvedic medical college, with the aim of reaching a standard comparable to that of AIIMS.
Homeopathy College: A new homeopathy college is also in the works, adding to Ujjain’s range of medical educational institutions.
With these developments, Ujjain will not only address local healthcare needs but also cater to the growing demand for alternative medicine and treatments.
The Chief Minister emphasized that Ujjain’s Medicity has the potential to make the city a sought-after destination for medical tourism. By attracting private sector involvement, the facility aims to deliver high-quality healthcare to patients from within and outside India, positioning Ujjain as a healthcare hub in both modern and traditional medicine.
The Bhoomi-Pujan ceremony, conducted with traditional Swasti mantras, marked the beginning of a transformative phase for Ujjain’s healthcare landscape. The Medicity and Medical College, with their comprehensive facilities, are set to redefine healthcare standards in the state. Dr. Yadav’s vision is clear: to elevate Ujjain’s status in the healthcare sector, making it a leader in medical education and a center for advanced healthcare in Madhya Pradesh.
