For the first time in Indian naval history, a brother-sister duo is commanding two different warships simultaneously. Commander Prerna Deosthalee and her brother, Commander Ishan Deosthalee, have achieved this milestone, reflecting their dedication and the evolving inclusivity within the Indian Navy.
Commander Prerna Deosthali made history last year by becoming the first female officer to command a warship in the Indian Navy. She is currently in charge of the fast attack craft INS Trinkat.
Her brother, Commander Ishan Deosthalee, has now joined her ranks by taking command of INS Vibhuti, a Veer-class missile vessel. This unique achievement marks the first instance of siblings concurrently commanding naval warships in India.
Both officers serve under the Western Naval Command, furthering their family legacy in Indian naval service. INS Vibhuti, which Commander Ishan Deosthali leads, has already been in the spotlight; it was part of the ceremonial “steam past” to honor President Droupadi Murmu off the Goa coast in the Arabian Sea.
During her recent visit on November 7, President Droupadi Murmu, accompanied by Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, visited the Indian Navy’s aircraft carrier INS Vikrant. She observed a naval operational demonstration showcasing the strength and strategic reach of India’s naval forces. In her address, President Murmu praised the Navy’s commitment.
President Murmu emphasized the Navy’s significant contributions, especially in emergency responses that save lives at sea.
The accomplishments of Commanders Prerna and Ishan Deosthalee underscore the changing landscape of the Indian Navy, which now includes and celebrates female officers in commanding roles. Their simultaneous command of warships is not only a matter of personal pride but a landmark moment for the Navy, setting a precedent for future generations.
This brother-sister achievement reflects the spirit of progress in the Indian armed forces, where commitment to duty and a willingness to break new ground are honored and celebrated.
