This story of change comes from Shivpuri district. Shanti Saharia, a resident of Hatod block, once lived a life of hardship in her hut. Meeting even the daily necessities was a struggle for her family. The meager daily wage earnings were spent solely on subsistence.
During the rainy season, her hut would leak, and she would spend sleepless nights. Basic amenities like education and healthcare were a dream for her. But today, Shanti Saharia and her family are experiencing a positive change.
Shanti explains, “Earlier, our lives were very difficult. We had no food, no permanent home, and no permanent employment. We had to go to the well for water, and sending our children to school was a daunting task.”
This change began with government initiatives. Under the PM Awas Yojana, Shanti’s family received a permanent cottage. This made their life safe and comfortable. Now, her family lives a respectable life with a permanent house in the entire colony.
Shanti happily says, “Now we have our own home, which remains safe even during the rainy season. The paved roads allow us to easily travel to the city. Tap water supply to every home has also solved the problem of drinking water.”
To further develop a source of income, Shanti started raising goats. The gas cylinder received under the PM Ujjwala Yojana has provided her family with permanent relief from stove smoke. Under the Ayushman Bharat (Niramaya) scheme, her family can now avail of free healthcare services.
“We receive monthly nutritional supplements, which have improved our children’s health. Now, I am confident that my children will be able to study and live a good life,” Shanti says proudly.
Shanti’s story is a living example that collective efforts can bring about significant change in society and the lives of the poor.
