US President Donald Trump has said that he is ending trade talks with Canada immediately. He said that Canada is preparing to impose taxes by targeting US tech companies.
President Trump has taken this step at a time when the US and Canada were working towards agreeing on a trade deal by mid-July.
Trump has waged a ‘trade war’ since taking charge of the US presidency earlier this year. Since then, both countries have imposed tariffs on each other’s goods.
On Friday, the US President said that he was ending the talks due to the high taxes imposed on US tech companies.
Trump also said that he would also announce the imposition of new tariffs next week. Trump wrote on Truth Social, “We are ending all discussions on trade with Canada with immediate effect.”
Trump said, “We will tell Canada within the next seven days how much tax they will have to pay to trade with America.”
However, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has indicated to continue talks with America. He said, “We will continue these talks in the interest of the people of Canada.”
