Many workers are trapped in a coal mine in Umrangso area of Dima Hasao district of Assam. This incident happened around 8 am on Monday, when some workers went inside the mine to extract coal.
Dima Hasao District Superintendent of Police Mayank Kumar Jha told the local media about this accident, “The exact number of workers trapped inside the coal mine is not known yet.” he said.
It is being told that after the incident, 17 workers have managed to get out of the mine, about 15 workers are still trapped. However, it has not been officially confirmeed. Officials said that rescue operation has been started with teams of emergency response team, local officials and mining experts.
The water is being pumped out with the help of two motor pumps.The workers trapped in the mine are being traced.
A relative of a victim worker present near the spot said that some workers are trapped inside the mine since morning. This accident happened as the water filled suddenly inside the mine. The coal mine in which this accident happened is said to be about 300 feet deep.
It has been learnt that the workers could not come out due to water filling up to about 100 feet inside the mine.
On this accident, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has written on the social media platform X that he has requested the army for assistance in the relief and rescue operation.
He has written, “There is a sad news from Umrangso, where workers are trapped in the coal mine. The exact number and condition is not known yet.”
It is being said that after the incident, 17 workers have managed to get out of the mine, while more than ten workers are still trapped.
According to the Dima Hasao district administration, the SDRF team from Hojai has reached the spot.
