NRC Aadhaar Assam: The Assam government has made NRC compulsory for Aadhaar card. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that those who have not applied for National Register of Citizens (NRC) will not get Aadhaar card.
Sarma said this decision has been taken in view of the rising Bangladeshi infiltration in the state. After a cabinet meeting, Sarma confirmed that all Aadhaar card applications will only be processed after NRC verification is completed.
The government said that the Aadhaar application will first be sent to the state government through UIDAI for verification. After this, a circle officer will confirm whether the applicant or his family has applied for NRC or not. This process will be completed in 45 days. However, this rule will not apply to central government employees.
Chief Minister Sarma said that Assam Police and BSF have recently foiled several attempts of Bangladeshi infiltration. Taking this problem seriously, the state government has decided to make the Aadhaar process more strict. Assam CM said that now the Additional District Commissioner in every district will supervise the work of Aadhaar verification. Under this, only those people will get Aadhaar who will be registered in NRC.
Sarma said the number of Aadhaar applications in four districts of Assam is more than the population. These include Dhubri, Barpeta, Morigaon and Nagaon. 103% applications have been registered in Dhubri, 103.74% in Barpeta, and 101% in other districts. The CM expressed apprehensions about possibility of fraud and said that it will now be mandatory to provide NRC receipt number along with Aadhaar application.
CM Sarma said that two Bangladeshi citizens were arrested from Badarpur railway station in August. They were identified as Masoom Khan and Sonia Akhtar. He said that this infiltration is a serious threat to the security of the state. The Assam government will now take strict action against any kind of negligence on this issue.
