Bhopal: The United Malyalee Association (UMA) celebrated Onam 2024 with a variety of events, which took place on Sunday, at the S.N. Mission Hall, Subhash Nagar, Bhopal. The festivities provided an exuberant homage to the rich cultural tapestry of the Malayalee community, drawing residents together for an evening filled with exceptional performances and heartfelt camaraderie.
The evening unfolded with a vibrant cultural showcase that captivated the audience from start to finish. The event was a testament to the community’s artistic flair and commitment to preserving their cultural heritage while embracing contemporary expressions.
The festivities began with a dazzling performance by Kalanjali, Bhopal, known for their dynamic integration of traditional and modern dance forms. Their captivating choreography and spirited performances set an electrifying tone for the evening, blending the essence of traditional artistry with the vibrancy of contemporary dance. The audience was enchanted by their creative expression and the energy they brought to the stage.
Following this, the Prathibhalaya Arts Academy, Bhopal, took the stage with a series of classical arts performances that brought an air of sophistication and grace to the event.
T Natyashri, another participant, delivered a series of performances that seamlessly blended traditional and modern elements. Their engaging and lively acts resonated deeply with the audience, showcasing the diverse artistic spirit of the community.
Musical performances were a central highlight of the evening, showcasing the rich musical heritage of the Malayalee people. The musical segment of the event was a vibrant celebration of the community’s artistic talents, demonstrating their deep connection to their musical traditions.
Earlier King Mahabali was accorded a grand and traditional welcome with the accompaniment of Chenda Melam alongside girls in Kerala holding Thalappoli (Diya with flower petals), it was truly a majestic reception.
This was followed by one of the most cherished moments of the evening –Thiruvathira Dance, a traditional Onam ritual that holds a special place in the festival’s celebrations. Performed with precision and passion, the Thiruvathira Dance illustrated the cultural significance of this beloved tradition, infusing the event with a festive and authentic Onam spirit.
The performance was a beautiful representation of the cultural practices that define the Onam festival. At the end a skit vividly brought the importance of caring and sharing in family life, with some emotional scenes.
O.D Joseph, President, UMA in his welcome address, emphasized that the true relevance of Onam in today’s life lies not only in following traditions but in incorporating the essence of the festival into our daily lives. He said the association recently celebrated its 40th anniversary with a grand Kerala Fest, showcasing the rich cultural tapestry of Kerala, offering the people of Bhopal a deep insight into the state’s traditions and heritage.
Malti Rai, Mayor, Bhopal, the Chief guest of the function, in her address said “Onam is a festival that symbolizes unity, peace, and harmony. It reflects the values of togetherness and community, much like the spirit we see here today.
Smt. Nusaifa K.K., Asstt. Commandant of CISF, in her address lauded the efforts of Malayalee community in Bhopal and appreciated the efforts of United Malayalee Association in organizing functions to mark every occasion.
Shri Babu Thomas, Chairman, St. George Group of Institutions, appreciated the efforts of the Association particularly in promoting Malayalam language through its Malayalam Mission classes, which the association is running under the Department of Cultural Affiairs of Govt. of Kerala. Shri A.G. Vallaban, President of Bhopal Nair Samajam, said that preserving and promoting art and culture is a vital responsibility of every citizen and everyone should contribute towards that.
K.P. Das, General Secretary, Anil Nair Vice President, also spoke on the occasion. K.M. Raghu Arts Secretary coordinated the entire program.
