Bhopal. A Chanderi and Kosa Saree Utsav has commenced at the Mrignayani Emporium GTB outlet, managed by the Madhya Pradesh Hastshilp evam Hathkargha Vikas Nigam (Madhya Pradesh Handicrafts and Handloom Development Corporation).
Running until August 17, the festival showcases exquisite products—ranging from traditional weaving and handicrafts to items created using natural dyes—all under one roof.
A highlight of the exhibition is the Tussar silk (specifically Sausar silk) presented by artisan Naveen Sharma. This silk is cherished across the country for its natural golden sheen, strong fibers, lightweight nature, and exceptional durability.
What Makes Tussar Silk Special?
Artisan Naveen explained that Tussar silk is a completely natural silk derived from the cocoons of silkworms found in forests. These silkworms are primarily reared on Arjun, Asan, Sal, and other forest trees. The natural silk thread extracted from the cocoons is processed into yarn and woven on traditional looms.
Naveen said that due to its natural composition, the thread possesses a subtle golden luster that looks attractive even without extensive chemical processing. This is why Sausar Tussar silk sarees feel relatively cool in summer and comfortable in winter, while retaining their texture for years.
Arvind Sharma, the exhibition in-charge, said that specially crafted Chanderi sarees featuring silk borders are also on display. The Zari borders of these sarees feature artistic motifs inspired by Chanderi’s historic Badal Mahal, lending them a unique identity. Additionally, artistic sculptures made of Panchdhatu (five-metal alloy) and bell metal are also showcased at the exhibition.
