Shail Patel, a resident of Bargi town in Jabalpur district, has emerged as a shining example of rural development and women’s empowerment. By associating with the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Rural Livelihood Mission (DAY-NRLM), she has not only achieved financial self-reliance but also become a pillar of strength for her family amidst adverse circumstances.
Her tea and snack stall, located near the Bargi Resort, serves as the primary source of her livelihood. As an active leader of her self-help group, Shail sells items such as tea, snacks, chips, Maggi, and patties.
Thanks to the stall’s proximity to major tourist attractions in Bargi and the steady flow of visitors, this small venture has transformed into a successful business. Shail shares that her family consists of five members; following the recent demise of her husband, the entire responsibility of the household fell upon her shoulders. It was the support provided by the Livelihood Mission schemes during those trying times that enabled her to lead a dignified life today.
The Livelihood Mission played a pivotal role in boosting Shail Patel’s business. She received financial assistance in the form of a Rs 20,000 loan under the scheme, which laid the foundation for her enterprise. With this support, facilitated through her group, she purchased the necessary supplies, utensils, and equipment for the stall. Today, the shop serves as the sole and reliable means of sustenance for her family.
Shail Patel’s journey—marked by struggle and success—conveys a powerful message: with strong determination and by effectively leveraging government schemes, any woman can transform her circumstances. Today, the Livelihood Mission is empowering thousands of women and integrating them into the mainstream of an ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-Reliant India).
