By 12 noon it will be clear who will form the government in Delhi.
Key figures in this election include Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, Atishi, and Avadh Ojha from the AAP; Parvesh Verma and Ramesh Bidhuri representing the BJP; and Sandeep Dikshit from Congress.
The AAP campaigned on its ‘Delhi model’ focusing on education and health to gain voter trust, while the BJP raised allegations of corruption related to the liquor policy and the renovation of the Chief Minister’s residence. Arvind Kejriwal, who previously resigned amid corruption allegations, has expressed his intention to reclaim the Chief Minister position if his party prevails.
A significant issue in the lead-up to the elections was Kejriwal’s accusation against the Haryana government regarding the pollution of the Yamuna River, which is a crucial water source for Delhi. This accusation led to tensions, with the BJP threatening legal action against him.
Most exit polls have indicated a potential victory for the BJP, although such predictions can be unreliable. The AAP has dismissed these forecasts, asserting that Mr. Kejriwal’s work for the people of Delhi will yield favorable results.
The BJP’s campaign featured four rallies led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and 14 events hosted by Home Minister Amit Shah, along with support from Chief Ministers of various states and allies.
On the eve of the vote counting, a new controversy emerged as several AAP leaders accused the BJP of attempting to poach candidates. Kejriwal claimed that at least 16 AAP candidates were offered ministerial positions and substantial sums of money to switch allegiances. The BJP has denied these allegations and has indicated plans to pursue legal action against the AAP.
