In a distressing development, two cubs of African female cheetah Nirvah were discovered dead at Kuno National Park (KNP) in Madhya Pradesh’s Sheopur district on Wednesday. Their mutilated bodies were found by a team from the forest department, who were monitoring the cheetahs’ movements through radio telemetry. Upon noticing that Nirvah was away from her den, the team, accompanied by veterinarians, inspected the area and made the grim discovery.
After thoroughly examining the enclosure, officials concluded that no other cubs were present. However, uncertainty remains about how many cubs Nirvah gave birth to. Initially, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav shared on social media that Nirvah had given birth to four cubs, but he later deleted the post, stating that the forest department would provide official confirmation on the exact number soon.
Despite the loss, it was confirmed that Nirvah is in good health. The forest department has collected samples from the deceased cubs and sent them for laboratory analysis to determine the exact cause of death. Officials assured that all other adult cheetahs and cubs in the park are healthy.
