In a move to bolster sports infrastructure and celebrate Madhya Pradesh’s rich sports heritage, Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav announced significant progress in sports development during a dedication ceremony for a new multipurpose indoor sports complex. The complex, built at a cost of Rs 11.43 crore, was inaugurated in Ujjain on Madhya Pradesh’s 69th Foundation Day. In his address, Dr. Yadav highlighted India’s recent strides in international sports, underscoring the achievements of Indian athletes in various global arenas.
Dr. Yadav praised Ujjain’s long-standing history in sports, particularly in gymnastics, athletics, basketball, and Malkhamb. Ujjain holds a special place in India’s sports narrative, especially in Malkhamb, a traditional sport that has grown in popularity. He said that the city is synonymous with Malkhamb, with the name “Ujjain” often immediately associated with the sport. Ujjain is also home to the Malkhamb and Gymnastics Academy, contributing to the nurturing of talent in these traditional sports.
Dr. Yadav expressed his vision that the new sports complex would provide young athletes in the Malwa region with a platform to develop their skills and represent Madhya Pradesh and India on national and international levels. “With these new facilities, we expect our young players to achieve their fullest potential and earn accolades in various sports disciplines,” said the CM.
During the event, Dr. Yadav announced further developments to expand sports facilities in Ujjain. Plans for a new stadium equipped with an astroturf surface aim to promote hockey and host Dhyanchand competitions. Additionally, Kshirsagar Stadium is set to be upgraded into a multipurpose complex. Furthermore, Dr. Yadav shared plans for a world-class cricket stadium on the Vikram University grounds, aligning with the state’s aim to foster cricket talent and host high-profile matches.
Dr. Yadav took time to interact with young athletes from a variety of sports disciplines. He visited the Malkhamb arena within the new sports complex and observed performances by local Malkhamb athletes, demonstrating his support for traditional sports. The CM also tried his hand at shooting in the newly constructed sports arena and engaged in a friendly table tennis match with player Anuj Mishra. His interactions extended to players in badminton, table tennis, and athletics, where he encouraged and motivated them to aim for excellence.
The newly inaugurated Rajmata Vijayaraje Scindia Sports Complex spans approximately 18 acres and is designed to support a wide range of sports. Constructed with an investment of Rs 11.43 crore, the facility offers an international-standard athletic synthetic track and a state-of-the-art gym.
