Bhopal: The Christian community in Bhopal today observed Palm Sunday with traditional enthusiasm and deep devotion across various churches in the city. Marking the commencement of Holy Week, Palm Sunday commemorates the triumphant entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem, an event witnessed by jubilant crowds who greeted him by waving palm and olive branches and laying them along his path. For Christians, this day signifies the final Sunday of Lent and the solemn beginning of Holy Week.
A palpable festive spirit filled churches throughout Bhopal from 8:00 am onwards. Special prayer services were conducted on church premises, beginning with the blessing of palm branches, which were then distributed among the assembled devotees. Holding these blessed palms, congregations participated in processions, reverently singing the sacred hymn of ‘Hosanna’. The celebrations culminated with holy worship and readings from the Bible within the churches.
Archbishop joins devotees at St. Michael’s Church
The Archbishop of Bhopal, A.A.S. Durairaj, joined the devotees at St. Michael’s Church in Badjhiri to celebrate Palm Sunday. In his address, Archbishop Durairaj emphasized the significance of welcoming the Lord as a symbol of peace and hope, urging the community to actively promote peace and harmony in their lives. He highlighted that the life of Jesus Christ serves as a guiding light, demonstrating the path of love, compassion, and service, values he encouraged everyone to integrate into their daily lives.
He also elaborated on the importance of Holy Week, which commences with Palm Sunday and culminates on Easter Sunday, noting that this week provides a profound opportunity for reflection on the sacrifice and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Holy Week begins with Palm Sunday
P.R.O. Father Alfred D’Souza provided further details about the observances of Holy Week, stating that it begins with Palm Sunday and will continue with the ritual of the Washing of the Feet on Holy Thursday, the solemn remembrance of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on Good Friday, and the joyous celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus on Easter Sunday. He also announced that a “padyatra” (foot march) for peace and harmony will be organized by the Christian community on April 19th, commencing from Bharat Mata Chowk.

पवित्र सप्ताह की शुरुआत को चिह्नित करते हुए, पाम संडे यीशु मसीह के यरूशलेम में विजयी प्रवेश की याद दिलाता है, इस घटना को देखने के लिए उत्साही भीड़ ने ताड़ और जैतून की शाखाओं को लहराकर और उनके मार्ग पर उन्हें बिछाकर उनका स्वागत किया था। ईसाइयों के लिए, यह दिन लेंट के अंतिम रविवार और पवित्र सप्ताह की पवित्र शुरुआत का प्रतीक है।
चर्चों में उत्सव का माहौल छा गया
सुबह 8:00 बजे से ही पूरे भोपाल के चर्चों में उत्सव का माहौल छा गया। चर्च परिसर में विशेष प्रार्थना सभाएँ आयोजित की गईं, जिसकी शुरुआत ताड़ की शाखाओं के आशीर्वाद से हुई, जिन्हें बाद में एकत्रित भक्तों में वितरित किया गया। इन धन्य ताड़ की शाखाओं को थामे हुए, मण्डली ने जुलूस में भाग लिया और श्रद्धापूर्वक ‘होसन्ना’ का पवित्र भजन गाया। समारोह का समापन चर्चों के भीतर पवित्र पूजा और बाइबिल के पाठ के साथ हुआ।
आर्कबिशप सेंट माइकल चर्च में भक्तों के साथ शामिल हुए
भोपाल के आर्कबिशप ए.ए.एस. दुरईराज, पाम संडे मनाने के लिए बड़झिरी के सेंट माइकल चर्च में भक्तों के साथ शामिल हुए। अपने संबोधन में, आर्कबिशप दुरईराज ने शांति और आशा के प्रतीक के रूप में प्रभु का स्वागत करने के महत्व पर जोर दिया, समुदाय से अपने जीवन में शांति और सद्भाव को सक्रिय रूप से बढ़ावा देने का आग्रह किया।
उन्होंने इस बात पर प्रकाश डाला कि ईसा मसीह का जीवन एक मार्गदर्शक प्रकाश के रूप में कार्य करता है, जो प्रेम, करुणा और सेवा के मार्ग को प्रदर्शित करता है, ऐसे मूल्य जिन्हें उन्होंने सभी को अपने दैनिक जीवन में शामिल करने के लिए प्रोत्साहित किया। उन्होंने पवित्र सप्ताह के महत्व के बारे में भी विस्तार से बताया, जो पाम संडे से शुरू होता है और ईस्टर संडे को समाप्त होता है, उन्होंने कहा कि यह सप्ताह ईसा मसीह के बलिदान और पुनरुत्थान पर चिंतन करने का एक गहरा अवसर प्रदान करता है।
19 अप्रैल को भारत माता चौक से पदयात्रा आयोजित की जाएगी
पी.आर.ओ. फादर अल्फ्रेड डिसूजा ने पवित्र सप्ताह के पालन के बारे में और जानकारी दी, उन्होंने कहा कि यह पाम संडे से शुरू होता है और पवित्र गुरुवार को पैर धोने की रस्म, गुड फ्राइडे पर ईसा मसीह के बलिदान की याद और ईस्टर संडे को ईसा मसीह के पुनरुत्थान के हर्षोल्लास के साथ जारी रहेगा। उन्होंने यह भी घोषणा की कि शांति और सद्भाव के लिए ईसाई समुदाय द्वारा 19 अप्रैल को भारत माता चौक से एक पदयात्रा आयोजित की जाएगी।
