The release of Kangana Ranaut’s new film “Emergency” has been postponed due to controversy regarding its portrayal of the Sikh community. Following the trailer’s release, there was considerable backlash in Punjab, and the film has yet to receive approval from the Certification Board. Originally scheduled for release on September 6, the date has now been pushed back.
Sources indicate that the film board has requested additional cuts, emphasizing the need to consider the sentiments of all communities. The Shiromani Akali Dal previously issued a legal notice to the Board, urging them to halt the film’s release, citing concerns that it could “incite communal tensions” and “spread misinformation.”
The notice, sent on August 27, criticized the film for presenting misleading and offensive depictions of the Sikh community. It said that Kangana Ranaut’s approach appears more focused on targeting this community rather than making a genuine political or historical statement against Congress.
In response to the situation, Kangana Ranaut expressed her frustration on social media, stating, “There is pressure on us to not show the assassination of Mrs. Gandhi, Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, and the Punjab riots. I don’t know what we will show then…” She concluded her message with, “This is an unbelievable time for me, and I am very sorry for this state of things in this country.”
