
There has been a rapid surge in cases of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) across the country, with new cases emerging daily. Earlier on Thursday, one person succumbed to Guillain-Barre syndrome in Pune, Maharashtra. This was third death from GBS in Maharashtra.
Meanwhile, the West Bengal Health Department has informed that two patients have died in the state so far. A 10-year-old child was admitted to a hospital in Kolkata and passed away during treatment on Sunday. The second was a 12th class student of North 24 Parganas district who succumbed at NRS Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
According to the hospital, the student died due to septic shock and myocarditis and doctors suspect that its root cause could be Guillain-Barre syndrome.
The Health Department of West Bengal held a meeting regarding Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS). The Health Secretary and other officials attended the meeting. All government and district hospitals in the state were instructed to immediately report any case of GBS to the Health Department.
The Health Department has also directed the hospitals to ensure the availability of necessary treatments including plasma therapy, ventilation support system and intravenous immunoglobulin injection and to stock adequate infrastructure for these treatments.
The meeting was attended by experts. After reviewing the situation, health officials issued guidelines to the hospitals.
