The scientific exploration of rare earth minerals and other critical elements has gained momentum in Madhya Pradesh. The implementation of the MoU signed between the Mineral Resources Department and the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) during the Mining Conclave held in Katni has now begun. In the first phase, mineral samples collected from Katni and Jabalpur districts have been handed over to IISER scientists.
Principal Secretary of the Mineral Resources Department, Umakant Umrao, and DGM Frank Noble A. have provided IISER’s research team with samples of potential rare earth minerals from mining sites in Katni and Jabalpur. IISER scientists will conduct advanced laboratory analyses of these samples. The initial phase of testing will focus on assessing the presence of rare earth minerals and gold in the mineral-rich Mahakoshal region.
The collaboration between the Mineral Resources Department and IISER marks an important milestone in enhancing the state’s scientific exploration capabilities. It will enable the generation of high-quality geological data, guide future exploration programs and help identify new deposits of strategically important minerals. Considering the rising national and global demand for critical minerals, this initiative is expected to position Madhya Pradesh as a growing centre for mineral-based economic development.
In subsequent phases, mineral samples from other districts will also be sent to IISER for testing. This MoU is set to open new avenues for technology-driven mineral exploration and strengthen the state’s long-term resource security.
