Dr. Varun Malhotra, Additional Professor from the Department of Physiology, AIIMS Bhopal, has been honoured with Sri Ramendra Sundar Sinha Memorial Oration Award for the year 2025. This award was presented by the Physiology Society of India (PSI) during the national conference ‘Physicon-2025’ held at AIIMS Bhubaneswar.
On this occasion, Dr. Malhotra delivered an oration titled “A Decade of Exploration: Integrating Yogic Practices, Exercise and Technology for Autonomic and Cognitive Optimization.” Based on ten years of research, he explained how traditional yogic practices can be combined with modern medical science to improve physical and mental health. His lecture was attended by senior physiologists and experts from across the country.
Under the guidance of Prof. (Dr.) Madhabananda Kar, Executive Director, AIIMS Bhopal, Dr. Malhotra’s work has played a major role in establishing scientific evidence for mind-body medicine. The research found that slow and cooling breathing techniques such as Slow Deep Breathing and Alternate Nostril Breathing help the body relax, improve heart function, and reduce stress.
On the other hand, fast and energizing practices like Kapalbhati and Surya Namaskar increase alertness, energy, and mental activity. The research also included modern technological approaches such as brainwave entertainment, which provide a new and non-invasive option for stress management.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, mobile app-based yoga and meditation programs were found particularly effective in reducing anxiety, stress, and depression among the elderly population. Dr. Malhotra has authored more than 100 research papers and 10 physiology books. His remarkable contributions to teaching and research have earned him several national awards.
