
Hooch Tragedy: At least 14 people have died in five villages in Punjab’s Amritsar after allegedly consuming spurious liquor on Tuesday. Police said five accused have been arested.
Six people have been admitted to the hospital. This incident took place in Majitha, Amritsar.
Amritsar SSP Maninder Singh said they received information last night at around 9:30 pm that people have started dying after drinking spurious liquor here. We took immediate action and detained 5 people including the main supplier Parbjit Singh, he said.
He said, “The death of 14 people has been confirmed and 6 people are currently admitted in the hospital. This incident took place in 5 villages.”
According to the SSP, these five villages are -Bhangali, Patalpuri, Marari Kalan, Therewal and Talwandi Ghuman.
The SSP said the Punjab government has issued instructions to take strict action against the suppliers of fake liquor.
Amritsar Deputy Commissioner Sakshi S. said that medical teams are going door to door in these five villages to detect symptoms.
Sakshi said, “We are trying to ensure that no more lives are lost. The government is providing all possible help.”
Sakshi Sawhney confirmed the death of 14 people and informed reporters that Senior Superintendent of Police Maninder Singh reached the spot to take stock of the situation.
Police said they have made five arrests in the incident. Those arrested have been identified as Prabhjit Singh, the main accused, Kulbir Singh, Sahib Singh, Gurjant Singh and Ninder Kaur, they said.
