Syed Abid Ali Death: Former India all-rounder Syed Abid Ali passed away on Wednesday (March 12), at the age of 83. Abid, who was also an outstanding fielder, played in 29 Tests for India.
The Hyderabad-born cricketer made his India debut in December 1967 in Adelaide, where he returned figures of 6-55 in the first innings with his medium pace – his career-best. On the same tour, he scored 78 and 81 in Sydney. His career in went on till 1974, when he finished with 47 wickets and 1018 runs to his name.
Abid Ali was considered a great fielder of India. He has played a total of 29 Test matches for the Indian team. Former cricketers have expressed deep condolences on the death of Ali.
Syed Abid Ali had established himself in the team as an all-rounder. Former Indian batsman Sunil Gavaskar has expressed deep condolences on Ali’s passing.
Gavaskar said, “I am very sad to hear this news. Abid Ali was a lion-hearted cricketer. He could do anything according to the needs of the team. Although Ali primarily batted in the middle order as an all-rounder, he also had the ability to open when required. Throughout his career, he made some remarkable catches on the leg side.”
In addition to this, Sunil Gavaskar said that Syed Abid Ali was the first bowler in the world to take a wicket on the first ball of a Test match twice.
Gavaskar recalled, “When I was making my debut in Tests, he had the opportunity to bat at the top. He would often run immediately after the ball was bowled. This habit of his proved to be effective, as it caused the opposing team to make overthrows, giving us the chance to score additional runs.”
If we talk about his cricket career, Syed played a total of 29 Test matches for India. During this time he took a total of 47 wickets. Apart from this, Syed also made an important contribution to the Indian team with the bat. He scored a total of 6 half-centuries in Tests and scored 1,018 runs. Apart from the Test match, Ali also played 5 ODI matches. During this, he took 7 wickets and scored 93 runs. In seven of his 29 Tests, Abid also had the distinction of opening both batting and bowling for India.
