Last rites of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh were performed with state honors at New Delhi’s Nigambodh Ghat here on Saturday.
Manmohan’s wife Gursharan Kaur, daughters Upinder Singh (65), Daman Singh (61) and Amrit Singh (58) were present at Nigambodh Ghat. The family also met Prime Minister Modi. The daughter lit the funeral pyre.
Sonia, Priyanka, Rahul and senior Congress leaders paid tribute to him at Nigambodh Ghat. President Murmu, Prime Minister Modi, Defense Minister Rajnath also came to bid him a final farewell.
During the funeral, Manmohan Singh was draped with his favorite blue turban. To remember Cambridge University, he had made one of its colors the signature color of his turban.
Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Bhutan King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuk, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, BJP President and Union Minister JP Nadda, Delhi Chief Minister Atishi, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress Parliamentary Party leader Sonia Gandhi, former Congress President Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, the chiefs of the three armies as well as many Union Ministers, diplomats and other dignitaries attended Dr Singh’s funeral.
Earlier, his mortal remains were kept for the last darshan at the Congress headquarters where his family members as well as many prominent leaders of the Congress paid floral tributes to him. After that, his body was brought to Nigambodh Ghat with a convoy. A large number of people gathered for his last journey, but due to tight security arrangements at Nigambodh Ghat, not everyone who reached the ghat were allowed to go inside.
