Cyclone Fengal, originating in the Bay of Bengal, is poised to make landfall along the Tamil Nadu coast in 2 days. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted extremely heavy rainfall, particularly in Cuddalore and Mayiladuthurai, with both yellow and red alerts issued across various districts, including Chennai. Strong winds, torrential rains, and potential flooding are anticipated, prompting authorities to initiate urgent preparedness measures.
In anticipation of the cyclone’s impact, schools and colleges have been closed in several districts, including Chennai, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, and Cuddalore. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin chaired a high-level meeting on Tuesday to oversee the state’s readiness.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local relief teams have been dispatched to vulnerable areas, ensuring swift response capabilities. Additionally, relief camps have been set up with essential supplies to accommodate affected residents.
The IMD has forecast widespread rainfall along Tamil Nadu’s coastal regions, with isolated areas expected to experience extremely heavy downpours. Wind speeds are predicted to range between 65-75 km/h, with the potential for tree uprooting and power disruptions. Rainfall intensity is expected to subside by 28 November, though light to moderate showers may linger. Coastal regions of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka are also likely to be affected by the cyclone’s outer bands.
Authorities have issued strict warnings to fishermen, advising them to avoid venturing into the sea until 29 November. Those already at sea have been urged to return immediately. Fishing activities are temporarily banned in coastal areas of Tamil Nadu and the Bay of Bengal. The Indian Coast Guard is actively patrolling the region to ensure adherence to safety measures. Similar warnings have been extended to fishermen in Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal.
The name “Fengal” was provided by Saudi Arabia under the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) naming guidelines. These guidelines ensure that names are easy to pronounce, memorable, and culturally neutral. The systematic naming process aids in enhancing communication and coordination during such natural events.
Authorities are urging residents in affected areas to remain alert and follow official advisories. Coastal residents should prepare for potential flooding, power outages, and transportation disruptions. Relief centers are fully equipped to offer temporary shelter and essential services. Citizens are encouraged to keep emergency kits ready and stay updated through official channels.
The state’s swift response and coordinated efforts aim to minimize the impact of Cyclone Fengal, prioritizing public safety and efficient disaster management.
